We play so that all except the first deal cannot add up. For the first hand, you show everyone else your card but do not look at it yourself.

Yes. There are many variations and this is a common one. It seems a little unreasonable at the 1 or 2 card level. On the first hand the last to bid
may have to bid 1 while holding only a joker. Some people use this rule from the 5th hand on. Whatever works for you.
